The Castle Wall Wine Bar or "The Wine Bar" for short, is situated on the Horsemarket, Barnard Castle, at the rear of Market Cross Jewellers.
Access is via a small alleyway leading from the main street. If you don't know it's there you'd miss it, however it's now a little more prominent on the Horsemarket thanks to a bold new sign, created by Barnard Castle based Dragon Bridge Design.
The Wine Bar has been a feature of the towns nightlife for the best part of 2 decades and has been in the hands of current owners, Roy and Sharon Sutton since late 2006.
The Wine Bar has recently undergone a contemporary renovation bringing this historic building bang into the 21st century.
The Wine Bar is spread accross three seperate areas, each offering something different to our clientele. The Top Bar | The Shooter Bar | The Yard
The main bar in the venue, the top bar is home to the dance floor, where you can boogie until the early hours.
The modern leather clad bar with its TFT monitors fit well with the historic stone walls which make up the venue, giving a wonderful clash of old and new.
The top bar boasts some of the latest sound and lighting equipment which helps add to the electric atmosphere that can be felt in here on a busy Friday or Saturday evening.
Music is mixed by DanceDJ's UK founder "Deano" who has been a professional DJ for nearly a decade.
Over the bar you can choose from a range of top name draught lager, beer and cider, mainstream bottled lagers, ciders and alcopops, or you can sample some of the big brand spirts that we stock. We also offer WKD Great Jugs and a selection of cocktails.
As its name suggests, this bar serves a fantastic selection of weird and wonderful shooters for those looking for a 'quick fix'.
The Shooter Bar also provides a more relaxed atmosphere than The Top Bar, allowing you to just chill out and get away from the hustle and bustle of the dance floor.
Now this bar breathes history. Its part of the former Barnard Castle Castle Armoury, and the main wall running the full length of the bar is part of the castle wall which some parts of date back to the 12th century, this wall also gives the whole bar its name.
It doesn't sound glamourous but the yard that seperates The Top Bar from The Shooter Bar is a popular part of the venue for all our customers.
Not only does it provide a large outdoor area for smokers, but allows revellers to congregate away from the busy bar areas.
On a warm summers evening (rare in Teesdale) this is often the most lively part of the venue, offering a taste of continental style drinking right in the heart of a small northern market town.
There are some major plans for changes to the yard to make the experience at The Wine Bar even better.
